Meteor Shower - I wonder if HG Wells chose the Twelfth of August for the day the Martian Cylinder reached Earth in The War Of The Worlds because it's the day the Perseid Meteor Shower is at its peak. It would make sense that the Martians would try to disguise their arrival.
