A tropical storm whipped the southern tip of Florida with high winds and rain on Monday morning and was forecast to gain strength as it passed over the Gulf of Mexico toward Louisiana, officials said.

Tropical storm warnings have been posted for portions of South Florida and the Florida Keys. as well as portions of the northern Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 10 miles west of Key Largo, and about 30 miles east of Cape Sable, Florida.
