"[I] couldn't believe it," John Bobbitt told ABC News, looking back on when a jury found his then-wife not guilty by reason of temporary insanity in 1994.

During her trial, Lorena Bobbitt testified that she didn't remember cutting her then-husband and her attorneys argued that the attack was the result of an "irresistible impulse."

When news broke that Lorena Bobbitt had cut off her husband's penis, the story was widely featured in national newspapers, evening news broadcasts and late night talk show monologues.

"It was the happiest day of my life," John Bobbitt told ABC News. "It's like, 'Wow.' It's like opening Christmas presents on Christmas day and you're a little kid. I was excited."

Two surgeons who reattached John Bobbitt's penis describe their course of action once authorities located Bobbitt's missing organ in a field.

Lorena claims that she cut off John's penis with a kitchen knife after he came home drunk one night and raped her. John Bobbitt denies her claims and tells a very different story.

Police responded to multiple domestic violence calls at the Bobbitts' residence and Lorena told ABC News in 1993 that she got an abortion after John said he didn't think she could handle motherhood.

John says they were living beyond their means. Lorena claimed that John became physically abusive as soon as one month into their marriage, but John denies ever abusing her.

Long before they became famous, John Bobbitt, then a U.S. Marine, was at a Marine Corps officers' ball when he met Lorena Gallo, who had emigrated from Venezuela to the U.S. on a student visa.
