Ferlinghetti, the publisher behind some of the Beat Generation's most important works and an accomplished poet in his own right, has passed away aged 101.

Ferlinghetti was known for his City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, an essential meeting place for the Beats and other bohemians in the 1950s and beyond.

He also published landmark works of the Beat movement, including Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Howl.”

Poet, publisher and bookseller Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who helped launch and perpetuate the Beat movement, has died. He was 101.

Ferlinghetti, who played a key role in a free-speech battle after he published Ginsberg's poem "Howl" in 1956, passed away on Monday evening, said City Lights Books on Twitter.
