Arizona GOP Gov. Doug Ducey said he would appoint Martha McSally to serve out the next two years of the late Sen. John McCain’s term, an appointment that comes after she narrowly lost a race for the state’s other Senate seat.

With her appointment, Arizona is joining a handful of states that have two female senators -- in this case, two who were bitter adversaries just last month.

Ms. McSally, a House member, lost her bid for the state’s other Senate post in November. She will replace Jon Kyl, who was filling the seat on a temporary basis.

"All her life, Martha has put service first—leading in the toughest of fights and at the toughest of times,” Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said in a statement.
