Pet owners across the country are being warned about a potentially deadly toxic algae. Three dogs in North Carolina died last week after swimming in a pond that had blooms of blue-green algae. Anna Werner reports.

Police in Texas have identified a minor in a viral video who they say is responsible for putting a dog in a clothes dryer and then turning it on.

Blooms of blue-green algae, which can produce toxins fatal to animals, have been connected to dog deaths in Texas, Georgia and North Carolina.

Some dog owners say they believe their dogs died after licking their fur, which had been soaked with the toxins of blue-green algae.

"The hardest thing I have ever done is hold these incredible animals and watch their lives slip away," the dogs' owner said

High levels of canine E. coli have been found in areas of Lake Banook and Lake Micmac, and Halifax is appealing to pet owners to help prevent it from happening.

University of Exeter researchers found green turtles often mistake strands of green, black or clear plastic as food - in the same way leatherback turtles confuse plastic bags for jellyfish.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins and can be harmful to people and pets. A bloom discovered in Lake Ainslie in Cape Breton last month has spread into parts of the Margaree River.
