A funeral for rapper Biz Markie was held on Monday after the hip-hop personality known for his 1989 hit "Just a Friend" died in July.

Biz Markie, a hip-hop staple known for his beatboxing prowess, turntable mastery and the 1989 classic “Just a Friend,” has died. He was 57.

He dubbed himself "The Clown Prince of Hip Hop." Rapper Biz Markie reached stardom with his 1989 ode to the brokenhearted. He died Friday, according to his representative. CBS News’ Jeff Glor takes a look back at his life.

Markie, whose real name is Marcel Theo Hall, "peacefully passed away" with his wife at his side, his manager said in a statement.

The rapper, 57, is still alive despite legions of fans sharing their condolences on social media in response to the false rumors.

Rapper Biz Markie has been hospitalized in or around Maryland for several weeks.
